As a Local, I Discover a Lot about My Country Travelling by Bus

Contributed by: Jaqueline on 05 June 2025

I call Malaysia my home. Growing up in Muar, Malacca and Kuala Lumpur, I know these places very well. Whenever I travel overseas, I am happy to share about the beauty of Malaysia and how the country is a phantastic place to explore and discover. However, I think most people miss out as they opt for the wrong vehicle for their local travel.

Oftentimes I fly. Penang is just a hop away. It is always a flight when I travel abroad. And I am sure we have all had the same experience: in between the airports we look at the sky, clouds below. Different clouds, sometimes there is clear sky, but what one sees is very little of the places below. Aways the same.

Many a times have I driven in my car to Penang, Kuantan or Johor Bahru for meetings. Direct, the shortest possible distance and time. I know the highway, but I hardly ever see anything along the road.

And a tour on a bus changes all that.

Instead of having to focus on the road, I can now look at what is happening outside; take in the sights, note how the landscape changes. There are waypoints that I can appreciate better. Instead of taking the fastest possible route, a chartered or rented bus can take a path with a different mission. Kuala Kangsar, Port Weld (Kuala Sepetang) and Taiping are all just a short trip off the highway. For the first time I would visit these places while on board the #SuperNiceTour2022.

Compared to a plane, a bus moves slowly. However, that is the attraction. I can stop wherever I want, plan the route according to my interests. Best of all, I can do this with my friends or family. Instead of being part of an anonymous group, I can make it a group experience. Plus, I can go where the plane can’t go.

An Exploration of Spaces: The Sarawak Tour with CAM CO-STAR

The upcoming tour is something I look forward to. Again, there will be so much to explore and see along the way! In the comfort of our CAM CO-STAR we will see the highlights of the state. There is actually much more to see and do, however, given time constraints, we had to curate the tour to some extent.

As the vehicle is already in service with tour operators in Kuching, one can hope that others will pick up on this idea and tour their home country by bus. Or tell foreign tourists that this is an option to consider.
