Sarawak’s Essential Tourism Sights - Damai Beach
Beach holidays aren’t usually on the itinerary of holidaymakers who venture to Sarawak, but they do exist. The quality of the beaches in Sarawak has a lot to do with the wild rivers flowing down to the coast from the interior and the sediments transported by them. One of the best and most accessible beaches is at Damai, less than an hour’s drive from Kuching.
The Damai beachfront including, the Damai Beach Resort, the living museum that is the Sarawak Cultural Village, and the Damai Golf and Country Club, is located at the base of the 810m-high Mount Santubong.
Damai appeals as a total package that includes a pleasant beach, fresh breezes, and kaleidoscopic sunsets over the South China Sea.
There are a few resorts located along the beach, including the Damai Beach Resort, located within walking distance of the Sarawak Cultural Village. The resort sprawls over a large expanse of landscaped gardens, and its facilities include two pools, two bars, a restaurant, and watersports activities. Sarawak Cultural Village is also the home of the annual Rainforest World Music Festival, which features an eclectic collaboration of musicians from around the globe.
Jungle treks can be arranged to the summit of Mount Santubong (about six hours return) or less rigorous walks on flatter coastal trails. Located in the Santubong National Park, the summit trail is demanding near the peak, as it is quite steep.
Nearby, Damai Golf and Country Club is a most picturesque and challenging 18-hole, par 72 golf course with a variety of holes ranging from those near the beach and those situated along mangrove-lined streams and in the foothills of Mount Santubong.
Damai Beach is close to Kuching, making it a pleasant destination to relax after exploring the wilds of Borneo by bus. Especially the CAM Co-Star is an ideal vehicle to go on such excursion with a bunch of friends or the entire family. The CAM Co-Star is highly agile while being spacious so you can access places where large coaches could not go.
